LAS VEGAS — A fire broke out in the southwest Las Vegas valley at the site of an apartment building currently under construction on Tuesday afternoon, according to Clark County Fire Department.

No injuries have been reported after a fire broke out at a block of flats under construction in Las Vegas in the US. The blaze destroyed the building, with flames visible for miles.

Nevada’s Clark County Fire Department said crews were battling the fire and trying to limit exposure around the property.

Once fire crews arrived a second alarm was called due to the amount of fire at the location. On Wednesday morning, more than 12 hours later, the fire was still burning.

The building was an apartment complex under construction by TRU Development, meant to have 614 residential units and over 2,500 square feet of retail space.

Brian O’Neal with the Clark County Fire Department stated that the building had been declared a total loss and that as of 6:30 p.m., the building itself remained unstable.

Initial reports to fire crews indicated that the fire was coming from the roof. As many as 75 fire personnel responded to the scene of the fire and no injuries were reported.

The fire shut down the majority of the 215 freeway for hours on Tuesday. A neighbor who had lived close by for over a year told 8 News Now that she got an alert to evacuate her nearby apartment.

“I’ve never seen anything like that in Vegas,” Erin McClendon said. “Just to see all that hard work, wow. We watched them build it from the ground up.”

The cause of the fire has not been determined. — BBC & KLAS
