Aramco and Rongsheng announce expansion deal for Sasref refinery | Arabian Weekly

Saudi Aramco and its Chinese partner, Rongsheng Petrolem, have signed a pivotal agreement to expand the Sasref refinery, a key asset in the Kingdom’s petrochemical sector. The deal, valued at billions of dollars, marks a significant milestone in both companies’ strategic ambitions to bolster refining capacity and enhance the downstream oil and gas value chain.

Sasref, located in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province, has long been a vital player in the nation’s refining infrastructure, converting crude oil into high-quality refined products such as gasoline and diesel. The expansion aims to significantly increase production capabilities and streamline operations by integrating new technologies and boosting efficiency. This collaboration aligns with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives to diversify its economy, with a focus on sustainable and value-added industries.

The move also highlights the deepening ties between Saudi Arabia and China in the energy sector, particularly within the refining and petrochemical industries. Rongsheng, a leading Chinese refining group, has become a crucial partner for Aramco in several initiatives across the region. This partnership will not only allow for more advanced refining techniques but also position both companies at the forefront of the global petrochemical market.

The Sasref expansion is expected to enhance Saudi Aramco’s downstream capabilities, complementing its existing joint ventures like Yanbu Aramco Sinopec Refining Company (YASREF) in Yanbu. YASREF, a joint venture with Sinopec, is another important project in Aramco’s global refining network, underscoring its strategy to forge stronger partnerships across the Asian and global markets.
